Recognizing the widespread isolation and uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, World War Two veteran Captain Sir Tom Moore united Britain and gave hope when it was needed most. What started as a family challenge to walk 100 laps of the garden and assist with his rehabilitation following a hip operation, became a household story that captured hearts around the world—and his goal of raising £1,000 actually finished at a staggering £38.9 million for the NHS COVID-19 appeal.
He and his family were overwhelmed by the support from far and wide, continuing to receive countless messages of encouragement after donating all funds to NHS charities. The Captain Tom Foundation was set up to build on the momentum, inspiring people and ensuring Captain Sir Tom’s message of hope becomes an enduring legacy.
The causes the foundation supports, including combating loneliness, are close to the family's hearts. When the second lockdown commenced in Britain, the foundation’s #WalkWithTom campaign was launched to encourage people to walk as a tool to keep their minds happy, talk to help someone else who may be struggling, and give, if possible, to help support others.
The foundation’s site now hosts a campaign community hub, powered by Squarespace. The foundation was connected to a member of Squarespace Circle, our community of independent experts, to help build it. Visitors to the hub can view an interactive world map of the campaign’s reach and read social media posts from participants who have organized walks in cities and towns all over the world. A spokesperson from the foundation explains that, with the campaign hub, “people can share their #WalkWithTom experiences, uniting and showing solidarity across the world through the simple act of walking together.”
Developed on a short timeline and with a specific roster of needs, the foundation’s site was created using Squarespace Enterprise, a new plan combining Squarespace’s most advanced features and premium support. Offering dedicated account management, expedited assistance, and specialized consultations around topics like SEO, Squarespace Enterprise provided the resources required to launch the site effectively on a quick turnaround.
Going forward, The Captain Tom Foundation will continue inspiring hope by fundraising and mobilizing people to walk, talk, connect, and find optimism, even in the darkest of times. More than anything, the foundation notes, Captain Sir Tom’s story and success have “demonstrated that small acts from any one of us can make a big difference.”
Join Captain Tom’s army of hope and use #WalkWithTom to share your journey on the community hub powered by Squarespace.
